Former soldier Adam Kilshaw knows only too well how difficult it can be for ex-servicemen and women to find a job after leaving the Forces.
Adam was medically discharged from the Army after 12 years in 2007, after suffering a head injury when he was assaulted in Yorkshire.
Adam, who had served in Iraq, Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Germany, then spent 19 months looking for work before South Ribble Council gave him a chance and took him on in their IT department.
And now the former sergeant with 28 Engineer Regiment is using his computing skills to help others in need, by setting up a jobs website aimed at ex-military personnel looking for new opportunities.
Dad-of-two Adam, 35, said: “At the moment, lots of soldiers coming out of the Army are struggling to find work. They don't get any help from the MoD (Ministry of Defence).
“I was medically discharged in 2007.
“I had lost a £30,000 a year job and was married with two kids and rent to pay.
“I went to over 30 interviews in the year and seven months I was unemployed, and was told I had a lack of commercial experience.
“But how could I get that experience when I'd been in the Army for 12 years?
“I kept pushing on and eventually the council in Leyland offered me a temporary job on a trial basis as an IT technician, which later became full-time.
“There is due to be a big amount of military personnel getting their brown letters soon and they might also find it difficult to get work like I did.”
The free website is also designed to help students and anyone else who may be struggling to find work, by allowing them to upload their CVs and search for employers.
Adam, who works at the Civic Centre in Leyland, also wants to encourage businesses and employment agencies to place vacancies on there and search for candidates.
He is even looking at adding video, audio and sign language facilities as the website grows, to help people with additional needs who are looking for work.
Adam, who lives in Bacup with wife Doreen, said: “There is nothing else like this out there at the moment.
“It's not just for soldiers but also for students due to leave university or college, to get their information out there.”
